THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR REFEREEING CAREER SO FAR–

Scottish Cup Final in 2001 as Assistant Referee.

ANY PET HATES IN FOOTBALL?

Football panellists, who don’t understand the laws of the game. I would make them pass the exam before they are allowed to pass on their opinion.

WHICH, IF ANY, LAW WOULD YOU CHANGE?

I would like to see a player cautioned for trying to get an opponent cautioned by putting pressure on the referee by waving an imaginary card in his face.

WHAT DOES BEING A REFEREE MEAN TO YOU?

Putting something back into the game after all the enjoyment it had given me when I was younger.

WHAT MADE YOU TAKE UP REFEREEING?

I wanted to play at a decent level but was never good enough, went along to referees training and enjoyed the camaraderie between the referees and wanted to be part of it.

YOUR REFEREEING AMBITIONS–

To retire without serious injury.

MAIN STRENGTHS–

Being calm in difficult situations.

MAIN WEAKNESSES-

Being calm in difficult situations.

FUNNIEST MOMENT WHILE REFEREEING-

I awarded a penalty for handball after a defender, standing on the goal line stopped the ball from entering the goal. I lost which number handled and consulted my assistant. After consultation we never knew who was responsible until I informed the teams I was awarding a penalty kick and the guilty party came out of the group of players and said “It hit me here” pointing to his side. I could have shaken his hand as he saved me from getting a bad mark.

ANY HOBBIES & INTERESTS-

Golf

ADVICE FOR A REFEREE JUST BEGINNING THEIR CAREER–

Listen to advisory panel members who are there to help and encourage you. The hardest part of refereeing is when you start and having someone to talk through the game with you. They have all been there and there was always someone for them to talk to.
